ABSTRACT

This paper investigated the effects of corrosion on the shear performance of cold-formed thin-walled steel connections. Two types of connections were studied, specifically the pure self-drilling screw connection and the self-drilling screw-pull rivet hybrid connection. 120 cold-formed thin-walled steel connection specimens accelerated by the outdoor periodic automatic spray salt spray test were subjected to the shear test. The failure mode, shear capacity, and load-displacement curve were obtained. Subsequently, the test results were compared with those of the uncorroded specimens. The results indicated a significant degradation in the mechanical properties of the connection plate due to the corrosion. As the weight loss rate increased, a linear decrease occurred. Under the same weight loss rate, the shear capacity of the pure self-drilling screw connection decreased more than that of the self-drilling screw-pull rivet hybrid connection. This phenomenon became more obvious with the increase of ageing time. When the weight loss rate was 25.1%, the shear capacity of the 0.8 mm pure self-drilling screw connection decreased by 17.89%, while the self-drilling screw-pull rivet connection decreased by only 7.24%. The calculation equation of the shear capacity for pure self-drilling screw connections and self-drilling screw-pull rivet hybrid connections under the condition of corrosion damage were obtained. This calculation provided a reference for determining the shearing capacity of corrosion-damaged connections.
